Surfing in Sardegna

The Islands have always represented in the collective imagination a place of escape, a refuge for the soul far from the bustle of the city. In front of the coast of Italy, we can admire the Sardinia, an island forged by the sea, a paradise for fauna and a land often still to be discovered.

The panorama of surfing in Italy has now roots far and solid and Sardinia has long been one of the favorite places for surfing and other water sports.

Respect for nature and for local people are two of the principles that inspire the surfer community in Sardinia, which has grown in recent years to become one of the most active in our country.

It should not surprise this run-up to the waves and untouched spots, in a magnificent region full of havens, which spot spots among the best in the Mediterranean.

The constancy of the winds favor the conditions for a Surf in Sardinia high level, best certainly in autumn, winter and spring. The island has a frequency of surfable waves for around 200 days a year and the quality of the water is everywhere excellent.

In Sardinia you can find spots that offer quality waves both on sand and on rock and often not very popular. The sometimes breathtaking beauty of the landscapes gives the island a special magic for all lovers of the sea.

On the west coast, a stone’s throw from our rental accommodation, you can find the best known spot on the island, and among the best in the Mediterranean, Capo Mannu. Just 30 km from Oristano, this is a bay facing south west which, thanks to the strong mistral, offers waves up to 4 meters high several days a week. For example, staying at our Casa Capo Mannu or in the Casa Mini Capo, you can admire the waves of these two spots and leave the house with the suit strung.

The real jewel of the south coast is Chia, which often has steep waves of up to 3 meters and strong winds from the north-east and west, is unmissable, not only for fun with the surf, but also for its spectacular landscapes; in particular, in Cala Cipolla you can surf sheltered from a promontory on a charming beach.

Also in the south there is the spot of Buggerru, one of the most characteristic centers of Sulcis Iglesiente for its landscape. The beaches that surround the small town are perfect for surfers even without much experience thanks to the sandy and flat bottom. On days of very rough sea, however, strong currents can be encountered.

Remaining on the west side, the spot of Porto Ferro is instead a huge bay 18 km from Alghero, with waves from 1 to 4 meters high, sandy bottom and not very crowded; the central part, sandy and with waves that come from the right and left, is excellent for those who are at the beginning, while the difficulty increases moving to the cliff.

Sardinia and its variety of surf spots remains one of the favorite destinations in Italy, but it has also long proved to be an alternative for foreigners who prefer the warm water of our seas.
